The CSUN SPRINT (Summer PRogress INcluding Tuition) grant provides special one-time funding to cover tuition for up to two state-supported CSUN classes (or 6 units) during Summer 2022 for students with demonstrated need. The grant is only available to students who meet the qualifications and cannot be transferred to other students.
This program is funded by the California State University Office of the Chancellor to help support students’ degree completion.
Students who have been notified that they are eligible for the SPRINT grant should carefully follow the instructions in the email to apply. Students should check their Degree Progress Report and/or consult with their academic advisor to make sure that the are courses are needed for progress toward the degree and to satisfy requirements.

Eligibility
The funding for this grant is provided by the California State University Office of the Chancellor to support degree completion among students who have demonstrated financial need, specifically those who met the eligibility for the Cal Grant or Middle Class Scholarship award during the 2021-22 academic year.
Process
To enroll, please follow the instructions in your notification email, sent to your CSUN email address. There is no other application form. The grant for $2063, the cost of tuition and fees for six (6) units or less, will be included in your Summer Financial Aid package. Your enrollment will be protected and you will not be dropped from your SPRINT courses for non-payment.
Cost
Summer 2022 tuition for “state-supported” classes is $2,063 for 6 units or fewer. The SPRINT grant is limited to no more than 6 units of enrollment and will cover this amount for eligible students. Recipients enrolling in more than 6 units will be charged an additional $1,206.
Other in-state students may enroll in these classes offered to recipients of the SPRINT grant but must pay the $2,063 tuition for enrolling in up to 6 units. Out-of-state and international students must also add nonresident tuition of $396 per unit.
The SPRINT grant covers tuition only. All students are responsible for books and supplies for the courses as well as housing and living expenses.
Class Formats
All SPRINT classes in Summer 2022 will be offered fully-online. Please check the class schedule to learn if a class is offered asynchronously or synchronously.
Class Schedule
Classes are scheduled in either Summer Session 2 (6/1-7/13) or Summer Session 3 (7/14-8/24). You may choose a class from either or both sessions.
Current List of Courses Available for the CSUN SPRINT Grant
Choose from the list of SPRINT courses (.pdf). You may choose two (2) classes. Unfortunately, the grant limits you to no more than six (6) units. If you want to take more units, you are responsible for the difference in tuition ($1206 regardless of units more than 6.0).
Note: students who have not been notified of their eligibility for this grant will be charged tuition of $2,056.00 for up to six (6) units, plus nonresident fees if applicable.
SPRINT Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why should I take the SPRINT this summer?
- It’s a great way to fill in required general education courses or finish courses you were unable to complete in the 21-22 academic year.
- You only have to buy the course materials.
- All the courses are online.
- Hey, it’s free. Why not take the opportunity to spend the summer learning something new or finishing something difficult?
Can I take more than six units?
The SPRINT grant only covers tuition for 6 units (or less). If you want to take more than 6 units, you will have to pay the additional tuition, which is $1,206. (Unlike regular summer classes offered through Tseng, these classes are funded and priced like Fall/Spring terms.)
What if I only want to take one course (3 units)?
While we hope you take full advantage of this grant by enrolling in 4-6 units, you may enroll in only one three-unit course.
I didn’t get an email about this grant. How do I know if I’m eligible?
The SPRINT Grant funding came from the CSU Chancellor’s Office with eligibility for students who demonstrated financial need in the 2021-22 academic year. At this time, only students who received a Cal Grant or Middle Class Scholarship award are eligible. We emailed all eligible students to their CSUN email addresses. You can check your Financial Aid award on the Portal to see if you received these awards and might be eligible. See the tutorial.
What if I am not eligible for the SPRINT grant? There’s a class on the SPRINT list I want to take this summer; can I enroll?
Priority for registration is given to students who received the SPRINT grant, but we expect seats to be available. You can register, but please note that tuition for this set of classes is charged like Fall & Spring tuition, for one rate for 6 units or less ($2,056) and another for more than 6 units ($3,262). Out of state and international students also have to pay nonresident tuition of $396/unit. The available seats for Session 2 will open to non-SPRINT students on May 10; the seats for Session 3 will open to non-SPRINT students on June 1.
When can I register?
Students notified they are eligible for a SPRINT grant may enroll upon notification. Funding is limited and Funding is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please enroll as soon as possible. Students not eligible for SPRINT grant may register through the portal beginning on May 10 for Session 2 classes and June 1 for Session 3.
What if I want to take one class from this list and one class from the regular (self-support) summer classes offered through Tseng College?
The regular (self-supported) summer classes offered by Tseng College are not eligible for the SPRINT grant. You may enroll in a Tseng College summer class, but will be responsible for the tuition. The SPRINT grant will cover the campus fee ($395) and, so you will be refunded that from Tseng College if you enroll in both. You would still owe the tuition for any Tseng College summer class(es).
I received notification I’m eligible for the SPRINT grant. But I don’t want to take any of these classes. Can I use the grant for classes in the regular (self-support) summer classes offered through Tseng College?
The SPRINT grant is restricted to the list of SPRINT (state-support) classes listed here in Summer 2021. The grant cannot be applied to the regular summer classes (self-support) offered by Tseng College nor can it be transferred to Fall or a future term.
What happens if I don’t pass the classes? Will I owe the money back?
If you don’t pass the class(es), the grades will affect your GPA and will count as enrollments. However, this grant does not need to be repaid even if you don’t pass. We want to help you be successful. Academic support is available through the LRC, Writing Lab and other resources. Let your advisor know if you are struggling. Let us know if you need more academic support.
Is SPRINT related to CARES/HEERF funding?
No. This grant is different from and has no impact on your eligibility for CARES funding.
