Five Gears FLC

November 6, 2014

We are getting many inquiries about this faculty learning community, which will devote participants’ combined energy to determining how best to make use of some 80 year’s worth of evidenced-based research on how people learn.

We envision a time in the near future when many CSUN academics make pedagogical decisions based on these Five Gears for Activating Learning.

For example:

• “Should we try this cool new technology?  Let’s see how it applies the 5 Gears in order to decide.”

• “Our students find course X to be challenging and many don’t succeed up to expectations.  Let’s see how we can more explicitly apply the 5 Gears to the obstacle areas.”

• “I’m on my Department Personnel Committee and wonder what I should be looking for during peer observations?  Let’s use the 5 Gears as a lens through which to communicate about teaching and learning in personnel settings.”
