This program allows faculty who have completed FacDev’s Get Up to Speed with Unconscious Bias Canvas course to come together in community to further explore the ways unconscious bias impacts the learning experience in higher ed, and how it can be interrupted.
Everyone has unconscious bias--it's a cognitive process that our brains use to save time when processing the huge amount of information we receive each moment. In this program, we have the opportunity to learn what unconscious bias is, how to identify our own biases, and how to bring them to conscious awareness. Our goal is to prepare faculty for success in racial equity work by building foundational knowledge about unconscious bias around race and ethnicity, and how bias presents in the higher education teaching and learning experience. Bringing our unconscious biases to our conscious awareness and learning strategies for interrupting them in our practice as educators is imperative for achieving the strategic directions and priorities laid out in CSUN’s Road Map to the Future, including aspiring to a more equitable future and disrupting systemic inequities.
The program involves engaging with a community of faculty four times. Each meeting will involve meaningful discussion around one of the modules in the Get Up to Speed with Unconscious Bias Canvas course. Eligible faculty who attend and engage in all four meetings and complete the writing activities will earn funding of $200.
