The Office of Community Engagement is hosting our annual Research and Service Symposium on Friday, May 15, 2020, held VIRTUALLY through Zoom, 12:00-1:15pm.

This event gives faculty, students, and community partners a chance to celebrate the incredible work they have done for their community-based learning/service learning projects. On top of the honor of receiving a nomination to submit a presentation, the Symposium showcasing and celebrating their work, they can win prizes up to $500.

All of our OCE grantees from the 2019-20 academic year are required to nominate at least one student or student group to participate. All engaged faculty members are welcome to nominate their students and invite their community partners as well.

Preparing for the Symposium

FORMAT:

Each student or student group will showcase their community-based learning projects through their 3-minute YouTube video. We will have asynchronous judging panels to the submissions. We will also have a real-time virtual celebration on Friday, May 15th (12-1:15pm) to recognize all students, faculty , and community partners who participated and to virtually present awards.

JUDGING:

We will have asynchronous judging panels to the submissions prior to the May 15th celebration. Your 3-minute video will be judged based on the clarity of the following criteria:
  • Community Partner/Community Organization
  • Community need or issue your service addressed
  • Project or program mission or goals
  • Methods of achieving these goals and services provided
  • Impact of your project – how the community and/or community organization benefited from your project and what you learned/ experiences gained in the process
If you are looking to include other people in your video…
For example; your classmates, professors, community partners, staff, make sure they agree to be part of the video and sign an Audio/Visual Release form. If you are working with anybody under 18, please contact the Office of Community Engagement for a separate form that needs to be filled in this case. Please email your forms to:  /" target="_blank">

VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS:
  • Upload your video to YouTube and make it visible to others (not “private”) For more information, see here.
  • Remember to caption your video. For more information on how to do it yourself, see here.
  • Fill out and submit the Audio/Visual Release form for yourself (and anyone else in your video) and submit Audio/Visual Release forms for all the other participants in the video. Please, upload it as one PDF file. You can scan the files if you have more than one.
