The first few years of life have the greatest impact – positive and negative – on all of us. Our brains develop at extraordinary rates. We learn to talk, walk, play and socialize.

From doula support and home visiting programs to child care and early education, elected officials make important decisions that influence the systems and programs that support this growth.

As a result, we hope you will join us on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon, as we host a forum with the candidates in two important open races in L.A. County: Board of Supervisors District 3 and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education Seat 2. These two bodies collectively make policy and budgeting decisions that affect hundreds of thousands of L.A. County families with young children.

This forum is a central part of our “Choose Children LA” initiative, run in close collaboration with the LA Partnership for Early Childhood Investment, to educate candidates running in November’s election about early childhood issues. It follows a similar effort in 2020 when we worked with community partners and community members to outreach to candidates and highlight the importance of birth-to-5 programs. This included a similar, intimate and issues-based discussion with the candidates.

As we have seen during the past two years, the candidates listened – and acted. Early childhood programs continue to expand with LAUSD, which is a leader statewide on the implementation of transitional kindergarten. L.A. County has prioritized families with young children in its equity and justice work as home visiting, doula and economic justice programs have increased.

The candidates able to attend, in succession, will have the opportunity to share their visions for how our local governments can help families with children birth to age 5 thrive while also supporting the workers who play irreplaceable roles in our children’s lives.
