Department of Physics and Astronomy’s annual Nuclear Physics Laboratory Open House

The Department of Physics and Astronomy's Nuclear Physics Laboratory will be open to interested staff, faculty and guests at 3 to 4 pm each Thursday in March. Room 1-100 in Live Oak Hall will have several operating alpha, beta and gamma spectrometers running and demonstrated by Senior Majors on March 5, 12, 19 and the 26. If you have an item which you suspect is radioactive bring it in for measurements. This service is partially sponsored by Community Engagement under Professor Joyce H. Burstein. For any special cases or consideration please contact the office of Prof. Duane Doty at 3362 (voice recording any time if not in). Read more

The words spoken in The (M)others are verbatim excerpts from interviews conducted by Nikki Yeboah with Bay-Area mothers who have lost loved ones at the hands of police. Through their stories, we get closer to understanding the toll police violence takes on families. These are the narratives of those who are left to put back the pieces after their loved ones are gone. Read more

GIS Day: Missing Maps Project

For GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day on Wednesday, November 14th, students can learn how to transform satellite imagery into open maps as part of the Missing Maps Project.  We will be mapping areas along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, showing the location of roads, buildings, and paths, to help with the delivery of aid to refugees and epidemiological work with diseases like Ebola.  The maps we make will be validated by refugee workers in place, and then used by local organizations in collaboration with international groups like the Red Cross and the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. Participants will get free pizza, learn new tech skills, and help some of the world’s neediest people. Read more
