Passing the UDWPE Requirement

All undergraduates who plan to graduate from CSUN must take the exam at the campus at which they are enrolled.

Updated CSUN GWAR Policy (8/4/21):

All students must demonstrate competency in writing skills as a requirement for graduation. At CSUN, all students who have met the lower division writing requirement, completed 56 units or more, and intend to graduate with a baccalaureate or master’s degree are required to demonstrate their writing proficiency in one of two ways.

  1.  Students may pass an essay examination as a demonstration of their proficiency in writing. The Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam will be offered throughout the academic year. See the Testing Center website for test dates, test fee and registration.
  2. Students may meet the GWAR requirement by receiving a grade of “C” or better in a minimum of 6 units of coursework in the upper division portion of the General Education curriculum.

Undergraduate students are required to meet the Graduation Writing Requirement no later than the semester in which they complete 90 units. Students who have not met this requirement by the completion of 90 units may have a registration hold placed on their subsequent registration.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

All students who plan to graduate from CSUN must take the exam. (If you are seeking a second undergraduate degree from CSUN, please check with your program to see if you are required to complete the exam.)

A student is eligible to take the test any time after completion of BOTH 56 semester units AND the lower division writing requirement (freshman composition).

TRANSFER STUDENTS

All transfer students who plan to graduate from CSUN must take the exam during their first semester at CSUN. (If you are seeking a second undergraduate degree from CSUN, please check with your program to see if you are required to complete the exam.)

There is no course substitute for the WPE.

Students must pass the WPE at the campus where they are enrolled; however, if you satisfied the GWAR at another CSU campus and have since transferred to CSUN to complete your undergraduate degree, we will accept an official verification of your passing score from that campus. Please check with Admissions and Records to ensure that your records reflect completion of the requirement well in advance of filing for graduation.

GRADUATE STUDENTS

All graduate students who plan to graduate from CSUN must satisfy the GWAR requirement. Please contact your department advisor for requirements in your program.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

All international students who plan to graduate from CSUN must take the exam. (If you are seeking a second undergraduate degree from CSUN, please check with your program to see if you are required to complete the exam.)

Please see requirements for undergraduates or graduates, depending on your status.
