Student Success

Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication

Specialized Tutoring in the LRC

Challenge

High DFU rates in foundation courses in Journalism, Art, and Music.

Solution

Partner with the Learning Resource Center to provide discipline-specific tutoring.

The Details

The Learning Resource Center hired tutors (recommended by the department) for students in Journalism writing courses, Music theory, musicianship, and fundamental courses, and Art history courses. This effort has been very successful in the case of Journalism and somewhat successful in Art. More students passed with higher grades. We added a Music tutor this fall so will know at the end of the semester if this has worked. (We do know that the number of students helped has been on a steady rise).
