Northridge– Students will be introduced to the 138,000 square-foot Student Recreation Center (SRC) during the Grand Opening Ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 at 10 a.m. The ceremony will feature a zip-line, live DJ, Dream World Cirque performers, Capoeira performers, arcade and carnival games, photo and video booths, free healthy snacks, and inflatable sports games. The facility is jam-packed with innovative features and services for students such as “The Ridge” (a 40-foot rock-climbing wall), a 1/8-mile track that hovers around the basketball courts, and equipment that pumps energy back into the power grid. The facility will cater to the 37,000 students on campus and is staffed by 250 new student assistants. The SRC has set a goal to register 10,000 students before the Grand Opening Ceremony.
“When the SRC opens next semester I will be there as much as I can,” said Arner Parsekian, Biology major sophomore. “Since the membership is already included in my fees, I can cancel my gym membership and save $40 every month. This is the perfect opportunity to take advantage and get in shape.”
Students will save money by cancelling their current gym memberships, and also will have access to a convenient and modern gym with all the latest equipment and studios. The SRC has features and amenities most private gyms do not, such as; two outdoor pools, basketball/volleyball/badminton courts, a rock-climbing wall, and free gym-towel service. The student fee for the SRC is $130 each semester, which is included in the current USU fee of $250 each semester. “It looks amazing, and I am excited about the new basketball courts and the rock wall,” said David Mercado, Biochemistry senior. “I’m constantly busy with school, and since the SRC will be open until midnight, I look forward to using it after class.”
The SRC accommodates students’ busy schedules, especially since most students commute and hold part-time and full-time jobs. The SRC is scheduled to open early at 6 a.m., and stay open until midnight from Monday through Thursday. The SRC will close at 10 p.m. on Fridays and also will be open during the weekend from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
