SOC 484: Progressive Community Organizing

This course we will examine the history of progressive community organizing in the US; explore different theories and traditions of effective grassroots organizing; and begin learning and practicing the organizing skills necessary to empower, protect, defend, and nurture your social networks and local communities. We will study the barriers to progressive grassroots organizing including but not limited to repression from governmental and non-governmental institutions. We will center strategies for building community self-determination, autonomy, and sustainability, especially from historically disempowered communities and peoples across the globe.

SOC 210: Social Inequality in the 21st Century

Why do some neighborhoods have more opportunities than others? In this course, you’ll learn about the real-world experiences behind inequality in the 21st century.

SOC 490 F/S: Supervised Field Instruction
Supervised Field Instruction is a course that provides an opportunity for students to apply social work theories to practice, to advocate for social justice, and to gain experience in an agency setting. The student is provided with the opportunity to develop anti-oppressive practice skills needed for working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities in a selected social service agency with field and faculty supervision.
