Biography

Jeremy E. Karpel is an attorney practicing exclusively criminal defense. He  is a founder and partner of his own law firm.

He is licensed to practice in all California State courts and in the United States District Court for the Southern, Eastern, Northern and Central Districts of California, and in the California Supreme Court.

He received a Bachelor of Arts in Law & Society (Criminal Justice) from University of California, Santa Barbara. He has a Juris Doctorate from Glendale College of Law where he was on Law Review and was Student Body President. He has managed his own statewide criminal defense practice since 2002. He has professional experience working for the United States Attorney's Office—Department of Justice in Washington D.C., the Santa Barbara District Attorney's Office, and the County Jail in the Own Recognizance Unit.

Mr. Karpel has experience handling State and Federal cases throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern, and Monterey Counties. He has appeared in more than 60 courts throughout California.

He has represented clients in all adult criminal courts, Juvenile, Mental Health, Drug, Dependency, and Administrative Law Courts.
Since 2005, Mr. Karpel has been a regular adjunct instructor for several Criminal Justice Department’s teaching courses in Criminology, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Investigations, and Criminal Law.

Mr. Karpel represents criminal defendants charged with all major crimes including murder, assault, robbery, burglary, rape, child molestation, drugs, firearms, theft, and Three-Strike cases. He has had the unique experience representing clients facing special circumstances in capital cases.

In his capacity, he has acted as a liaison with all agencies, including District Attorney’s, City Attorney’s Office, US Attorney’s, multiple investigators, state and federal courts, police and sheriff divisions, SEC, FBI, ATF, DOJ, US Postal Inspector, Secret Service, jails and prisons. He has also represented many clients before state licensing agencies and Boards.

Mr. Karpel handles all plea negotiations, proffer/plea agreements, and case settlements. He is highly accomplished in sentencing alternatives and mitigation advocacy.

Mr. Karpel has experience working with volumes of experts in the criminal justice community including: psychiatrists and forensic psychologists, experts in firearm and ballistics, eyewitness identification, gangs, DNA, medical & pathology, forensic accounting, sexual assault, coerced confessions, questioned document examiners, handwriting & fingerprinting, police practices, and more.
He is readily familiar with the organization and structure of all county, state and federal correctional institutions as well as experience with post release programs.

Mr. Karpel is also a licensed Private Investigator and has managed and directed complex trial matters with experts and investigators for over a decade. He has further extensive experience with high profile and complex investigations and has acquired training in interview techniques and police procedures.

Professor Karpel teaches CJS 320 Introduction to Criminal Law, CJS 422 White Collar Crime and other CJS courses.
