Steve Graves, Ph.D.
Professor, CSUN Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences
Watch the video: Using MS Copilot and San Diego State's QTI Question Translator to make quizzes in Canvas on YouTube.
About this Video
This tutorial demonstrates one possible work flow for generating text from Youtube videos, cleaning it up with Word - and MS Copilot AI tools - and then generating a series of formatted questions that can be uploaded to a website at San Diego State that converts .txt files with questions into a QTI formatted .zip file that can uploaded to Canvas as both a generic quiz and a test bank that can be used in a quiz. The instructions can be easily adapted to use any text to generate quiz questions for use in Canvas.... especially without Respondus software.

A specialist in spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Dr. Graves focuses on helping students understand how location shapes social, economic, and environmental outcomes.
Dr. Graves earned his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Illinois (1999), an M.A. in Geography from Miami University (1993), and both a B.S. in Education (1991) and a B.A. in Political Science (1988) from The Ohio State University. His interdisciplinary expertise spans urban, social, economic, and health geography, popular culture, forensics, and geography education.
His research examines the spatial dynamics of inequality, with particular emphasis on predatory lending, crime patterns—including officer-involved shootings—and health disparities. He has led and collaborated on numerous community-engaged projects, including mapping health hazards and inequities in the San Fernando Valley, analyzing access to opioid treatment facilities, studying the relationship between fast food environments and childhood health outcomes, and contributing to regional and national COVID-19 trend mapping efforts. His work consistently demonstrates how geographic patterns influence opportunity, risk, and quality of life.
Committed to mentorship and community impact, Dr. Graves has supported student research on access to healthcare, food systems, recreation, emergency services, and environmental hazards. He is widely recognized for his dedication to student success and for fostering inclusive, equity-focused geographic inquiry that empowers students to “ask where” and understand how place matters.

Reality Reimagined: Frontiers in Research and Education through Extended Reality (XR)
Abstract:
Extended Reality (XR) systems, encompassing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), have experienced a surge in adoption across diverse disciplines in recent years. This presentation will offer a concise overview of XR technologies and their wide-ranging applications. We will then introduce several research trajectories pursued by our lab, highlighting both completed and ongoing projects that harness the power of XR systems. We will share insights drawn from these studies, focusing on the ocular, behavioral, and cognitive implications of XR usage.
Bio:
Dr. Drew earned her PhD in Psychology from UC Irvine in 2009, studying visual perception in the Human Information Processing Lab. She completed two post-doctoral positions: one at UCI's mindSPACE Laboratory, studying retinotopic mapping in the occipital cortex, and another at Western University of Health Sciences' College of Optometry, focusing on oculomotor dysfunction. Dr. Drew is currently a Professor in CSUN’s psychology department and the Principal Investigator of the Visual Information Processing and Neuroscience (VISN) Lab. Her interdisciplinary research approach combines neuroscience, psychophysics, psychometrics, and optometric methodologies to comprehensively examine the visual system and its interaction with emerging technologies.
