Plan. Prepare, Practice!

August 20, 2015

On Thursday, August 13th from 8:00 -10:00 a.m., in collaboration with Jenny Novak, CSUN’s Emergency Preparedness Manager, Klotz Student Health Center Director, Dr. Yolanda Reid Chassiakos, SHC Staff, CERT volunteers, (Community Emergency Response Training), and student volunteers participated in an earthquake drill at the Klotz Student Health Center.

First, the announcement came over the public address system advising everyone to drop, cover and hold as Jody Sawyer, the health center’s emergency preparedness coordinator, described the experience of a 8.1 magnitude earthquake.  30 seconds later, we were informed that the “shaking” had stopped and were asked to evacuate the building as quickly as possible.

Building marshals checked offices for faux “injured” victims and others left behind who needed assistance. Emergency supplies came out of the emergency shed. Tarps in blue, yellow, red and black were used to differentiate injuries and their severity. CERT volunteers took the lead to insure tents were assembled that could be used for porta potties and administrative needs. Water, bandages, emergency blankets, and other supplies were distributed to medical providers assisting those in need.

Outside, Dr. James Merrin served as the medical triage physician, ensuring trauma “victims” with mock concussions or broken bones, were attended to on the appropriate tarp depending on their severity of injury.  All the “patients” did well, and recovered or improved!

The activity concluded with a debriefing among everyone who participated. Participants provided both verbal and written feedback that will help the SHC be ready in case disaster strikes. “You can never be overly prepared”, said Jody.

So until next time, or when the real emergency comes, we will plan, prepare, practice-and repeat!
