Early STEM Program Logo

  • Who:

Early STEM is a free, optional—yet strongly encouraged—program for incoming freshmen majoring in the College of Science and Mathematics (Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics and Astrophysics)

  • Why:

The College of Science and Math is committed to helping students build a strong mathematical foundation for success in their STEM coursework. This program provides an opportunity to deepen your understanding of concepts learned in high school and address any gaps before the Fall semester begins.

In addition to academic preparation, you’ll have the chance to connect and collaborate with peers, faculty, and advisors early on. Participants may also take the Math Diagnostic Test, which could allow you to place into a higher-level math course. (Taking the test is optional.)

  • Cost:

The program is completely free.

  • When:

You will begin receiving invitations to join the program in the first week of May, with additional invitations sent on a rolling basis. The program concludes on August 14, 2026.

You are not required to participate for the entire duration and may access the program at any time during this period. Once you register, you will retain access to the online practice platform for six months.

  • Format:

You will use ALEKS, an adaptive online learning platform, to strengthen the specific math skills you need. The program is flexible and asynchronous, allowing you to work from home at your own pace, with support from an instructor and online tutors.

  • How to get started?

The deadline to submit "Intent to enroll" is May 1, 2026. Students majoring in the College of Science and Mathematics will receive an invitation to their CSUN email address to join the program after submitting the "intent to enroll". You can simply reply to the message you will receive to your CSUN email whether you are interested in the program or not, and then you will receive all the information you need.

FAQ:

  • Q: I am not a majoring in any of the majors listed above (Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics and Astrophysics). Can I join the program?
  • A: Students majoring in STEM in Andrew J. Anagnost College of Engineering & Computer Science, will receive an invitation from that college to join a similar summer program.

  • Q: I will be on vacation during most of the summer. Should I join the program regardless?
  • A: Yes! The program is self-paced and you can work on it from anywhere. Even if you do a little practice online, you will be still better prepared for your Fall class.

  • Q: Can I change my mind and not complete the program if I don't like it?
  • A: Yes! You are NOT required to complete the program. This is just a great and free opportunity for you to refresh your math skills.

  • Q: Where can I get help with the math problems?
  • A: We will offer free online tutoring for you during the summer. You can access the tutors by a simple click on a Zoom link (will be provided for you)

  • Q: How high can I be placed if I take the Math Diagnostic Test?
  • A: The Math Diagnostic Test is optional; however, you will have the option to attempt the test. Actually, you will have up to three attempts before the end of the program, and your highest score will be used for fall placement. The test is proctored in person at CSUN. Based on your highest score, you may qualify to place into a higher-level course, such as MATH 102 (without the support class), MATH 105 (Pre-Calculus I), or even MATH 150A or 255A (Calculus I).
