What's New in the Department

Well-deserved congratulations to Dr. Matthew d’Alessio on being awarded a Distinguished Teaching award at CSUN’s 2018 Honored Faculty Reception. Faculty from eight CSUN colleges wrote in support of Professor d’Alessio’s nomination based on his expertise in developing curriculum, teaching students, and supporting teaching innovations by his colleagues. Faculty Senate President Adam Swenson praised Dr. d’Alessio as an “innovative and respected educator.” The department agrees and we are very proud of Dr. d’Alessio and his work to improve science education.

After 40 years of dedicated teaching and service to the University and Department of Geological Sciences, Gerry Simila retired in December 2017 and was granted the honor of Emeritus Professor status in August 2018. In addition to his sponsored seismological research in Costa Rica and the western US, Gerry was funded through the San Fernando Valley Science Project to raise science standards in local K-12 schools. We wish Gerry the very best in retirement. Commendably, he continues to be active in his field working on various research projects and visits campus regularly.
