Dr. Elena Miranda Receives 2020 CSUN Outstanding Faculty Award

As the only underrepresented minority faculty member in the Department of Geological Sciences and one of the few in her field of research, her teaching methods and the experience she brings to our institution are instrumental in yielding outstanding results for our underrepresented students in these areas. Her efforts have resulted in an unusually large number of underrepresented minority or female undergraduate students co-authoring papers and presentations at national meetings. Read more

In Memoriam - Dr. Ali Tabidian

Ali Tabidian

With great sadness we share that our colleague Dr. Ali Tabidian, retired Professor of Geology, died on March 16 due to pancreatic cancer. Ali taught at CSUN for over 30 years between 1988-2018, during which time he was a valued member of our department. He received his PhD from the University of Nebraska in 1987, and started his professorship at CSUN in 1988. He taught courses in Hydrogeology, Groundwater Computer Modeling, Environmental Geology, Hydrogeochemistry, and Geology of Planet Earth, among others.  Read more

Hydrology Group Tracks Mercury Mine Pollution in Central CA

Over 115 years of mining (1854 - 1972) at the former New Idria Mercury Mine resulted in extensive and persistent environmental contamination. Mercury, a global pollutant, is a bioaccumulative neurotoxin that adversely impacts human and ecosystem health. Rachel Hohn, a MS student in the Department of Geological Sciences and Water Science Program at CSUN, is working under the direction of Drs. Ganguli and Hauswirth to characterize seasonal variability in mercury concentrations in water and sediment downstream from New Idria, which was designated a Superfund Site in 2011... Karen Savage receives the College of Science and Mathematics Instructor award for 2019

Congratulations to Karen Savage (MS ’96) who received the CSUN College of Science and Mathematics Instructor/Part-Time Teacher Award for 2019. Karen is currently a full-time lecturer in our department, and teaches courses including Geology of Planet Earth (GEOL 101), The World Ocean (GEOL 122), Environmental Geology (GEOL 300), and Introduction to Physical Science (PHSC 170). These classes are always extremely popular and she has provided a number of new majors to our department. In addition to a great instructor, Karen mentors other adjunct faculty and students in our department, and contributes to curriculum development. Congratulations Karen!   .
