Graduating Class of 2023

The Department of Geological Sciences marked a significant milestone on Friday, May 19, 2023, as it hosted this year’s departmental convocation ceremony.

The event served as a well-deserved recognition and celebration of the hard work and dedication displayed by this year’s graduating class of undergraduate and graduate students. Amidst an air of excitement and anticipation, the convocation brought together faculty, families, and friends to honor the achievements of these scholars.

Faculty members recorded short congratulatory videos for their students, after which Dr. Richard Heermance, the Department Chair, commended the grad students for their commitment to academic excellence and their comradery throughout their tenure as students. One of the highlights of the convocation was the presentation of awards to acknowledge the accomplishments of exceptional students. The Department took pride in recognizing the outstanding achievements of two remarkable individuals this year. The Outstanding Graduate Student Award was presented to Georgina (Judy) Campos, in recognition of her exceptional research contributions and commitment to advancing the field.

As part of their ongoing commitment to supporting student success, the Department of Geological Sciences also presented several awards aimed at assisting students with the costs of the upcoming Summer Field program. These awards provide practical support as they continue to pursue their studies and grow as scientists.

The convocation ceremony in the department concluded with a group walk to the Oviatt Lawn for the full College of Science and Math graduation. We are all very proud of the graduating class as this year marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives as geological professionals.
