Rules for Safe Operation of Powered Carts & Low -Speed Vehicles (LSV)

The Following Operating Rules Apply To Both Electric, Gasoline Powered Carts and Low-Speed Vehicles (LSV)

  • Only drivers authorized by the University and trained in the safe operation of powered carts and LSV shall be permitted to operate such vehicles.
  • All prospective cart operators must receive training before being allowed to operate a powered cart or LSV.  Training is required every four (4) years.
  • Seatbelts must be worn by all vehicle occupants at all times.  The maximum number of passengers is equal to the number of seatbelts in the vehicle.  All passengers must be in a seat while the cart or LSV is moving - No Exceptions.  Drivers violating this safety rule may have their driving privileges suspended or revoked.
  • Operators and passengers shall keep their arms and legs inside the cart at all times and shall not jump on or off of moving vehicles.
  • Powered carts and LSV shall not exceed 15 mph on all campus roadways.

            LSV:

      1. Shall be driven on campus streets and not on campus sidewalks whenever possible.
      2. Are capable of reaching 25 mph. (so watch your speed!)
      3. LSV can be driven on public streets posted 35 mph or less, which are adjacent to the campus.

            POWERED CARTS:

      1. Shall not be driven off-campus.
      2. Powered carts shall not be driven on campus streets whenever possible.  If a sidewalk must be used, the vehicle speed should not exceed that of the pedestrian traffic.
      3. Powered carts shall not be driven on lawns at any time.
  • Operators shall be familiar with, and observe all established traffic laws.  Citations may be issued for violations of traffic laws.
  • Materials and equipment shall be properly secured so that they will not shift or fall off of moving carts or LSV.
  • Powered carts and LSV shall not be operated at night without properly working head and tail lights.
  • Be extremely cautious while making turns and while driving on uneven surfaces to avoid tipping while driving a powered cart.
  • Parking is prohibited in the following areas:
    1. Red and Medical zones
    2. Near building entrances and exits
