3WINS Fitness and CSUN Kinesiology Department present an important message by Steven Loy, Ph.D.:

So much has been out of our control these past two years.  I tell my students all the time, “Control Your Destiny” but I also tell them, control what you can.  After two years of COVID-19, we find ourselves in a different place, not as comfortable as before March 2020 but also not as bad as it seemed it was going to be.

Before the pandemic, almost 80% of American adults were not meeting the minimum CDC guidelines for physical activity.  Despite all the Peloton purchases, I would hypothesize the numbers are similar and if I am an example, our weight has increased and likely it’s fat weight.

OK!  Time to take control.  What I am proposing is begin engaging to meet the minimum CDC guidelines of 150 minutes (30 minutes per day most days) per week of moderate intensity activity combined with 2 days of strength building activity.  What’s the return? 33% reduction in risk for all-cause mortality. Steps towards a longer life and a greater quality of life.  From my decades of watching staff and faculty on campus enter retirement in less-than-optimal health . . . a hope for more to enter their retirement years by taking the right steps now.

Students from our 3 WINS Fitness program and I will help you get started.  Beginning this Friday and every Friday until the end of the semester (except for April 15), we will show you how to get started and gradually progress.  We can discuss your hopes, dreams, and smart goals as you initiate these steps.

Step 1: Scan the QR Code bellow with your phone camera and determine if you’re ready to start a moderate intensity activity program or if you need to make a visit to the doc first.

Step 2: Make the commitment to come by Friday from 12:15pm to 12:45 and we’ll get you started … and while you’re at it, call a friend at CSUN and have them join you!  Want a goal to shoot for?  We got you covered.

Step 3: Prepare for The San Fernando Valley Mile on Oct. 29, 2022.  Walk, run, dance your way down Maclay Ave. in San Fernando and here’s a video for an additional free program we are conducting on Saturday mornings at El Cariso Park in Sylmar.

Please join us if you’re interested or simply to ask questions.
