Student Pay on Sponsored Projects

March 24, 2020

All student employees, including those funded by grants, will be made whole (i.e., paid for their typical working hours) through the remainder of the spring semester whether or not they are able to come to work.

If you have already identified work in support of your research that your students can do remotely, please assign them those tasks.  If you haven't done so, or are concerned about what kind of remote work would be allowable on your grant, I urge you to reach out to your program officer ASAP to discuss it.  Please think as flexibly as possible about how to keep your students productively employed on your project.  Even for lab or field based studies, they may be able to contribute to data analysis, manuscript development, etc. under your (remote) supervision.

Like much in the unfolding COVID-19 situation, the question of how long and how much to pay student employees may change rapidly.  For the sake of supporting our students to the fullest extent possible, including providing them some financial security and a sense of normalcy in these difficult times, I ask you to please consider what grant-related work your student employees can do now and through the near future, and to discuss it with your program officer if you have any questions.

Your project liaisons are also available to provide guidance and help you navigate the many ways your projects may be impacted by the recent changes.  Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help.

Note: A previous version of this article stated that students would be paid through April 5th, per a CSU system-wide directive. Subsequent communications confirm that support for CSUN's employed students will be extended through the remainder of spring semester.
