CSU Police Among Those Who Ran in 120-Mile Relay to Las Vegas
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 11, 2006) -- Twenty-one California State University Police officers, including nine from Cal State Northridge, were among the nearly 5,000 runners who made the 120-mile journey from Baker, Calif., to Las Vegas as part of the annual "Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay" earlier this month.
Nearly 250 teams representing law enforcement agencies in California, Nevada and Texas as well as officers from Australia, Wales and Great Britain took part in the 21st annual event.
The 21-member California State University Police team was comprised of nine members from Northridge, five members from Los Angeles, three from Dominguez Hills, three from Long Beach and one retired officer from Fullerton. The team completed the 120-mile relay in 21 hours and 47 minutes. Several additional personnel from the Northridge, Fullerton and Los Angeles campuses served in a support capacity by staffing a command post, keeping official run times and driving the follow vehicle.

Team captain Frank Gudani, a Cal State Northridge police officer, began putting together the CSU group in early 2005, but many of them had never trained together until the day before the race.
"It was great to see the team come together," Gudani said. "I attribute the success of the team to each member."
Cal State Northridge Police Chief Anne Glavin said it was "absolutely wonderful to see the camaraderie between all of the CSU departments and how everyone clicked as one team.
"I was proud of all of them--as individuals, for representing their departments and the CSU system. I am especially proud of the Northridge representatives and Corporal Frank Gudani for making it all happen," she said.
The event, organized by the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club, first began in 1985 and was designed to promote and maintain physical fitness and camaraderie among officers and law enforcement personnel.
