CSUN Ranks High in Overall Bachelors Degrees to Latinas

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 24, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge ranks among the top ten in bachelor's degrees given to Latinas, based on National Center for Education Studies statistics compiled by the Hispanic Outlook for Higher Education Magazine in its February 7 issue.

CSUN ranked seventh overall for bachelor's degrees given to Latinas. Eight of the top twenty schools ranked came from California. California universities, including Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Fullerton, also finished in the top twenty. CSUN ranked above San Diego State University and the University of California, Los Angeles.

"Cal State Northridge always has had a strong, historic commitment to serving students from traditionally underrepresented communities," said CSUN President Jolene Koester. “The faculty and staff at Cal State Northridge take great pride in providing a quality academic experience for all students, and we are honored to be recognized for the success of this work."

The magazine stated that out of the top twenty schools in the grouping, more Latinas attained bachelor's degrees than Latinos. California's universities also led the nation in master's degrees earned by Latinas and in the number of Latinas listed as full-time faculty in universities, according to the survey.

The top three schools with Hispanic female enrollment are the University of Miami, the University of Southern California, and Columbia University, respectively. The University of California, Santa Barbara is the only school with more Latinos enrolled.

For doctorate degrees, the survey noted that the University of California, Berkeley, UCLA, and George Mason University were the only schools that had more Latinos than Latinas.

Overall, the magazine concluded that schools with the most Latina new hires are being employed in greater numbers than their male counterparts and are simply outpacing Latino males in earning undergraduate and graduate degrees.

California State University, Northridge has 33,000 full- and part-time students and offers 63 bachelor's and 48 master's degrees as well as 28 education credential programs. Founded in 1958, CSUN is among the largest single-campus universities in the nation and the only four-year public university in the San Fernando Valley. The university serves as the intellectual, economic and cultural heart of the Valley and beyond.
