Pathways to Excellence: Program Description

You’re in the right place for CSUN’s Pathways to Excellence (P2E) Program for first-time freshmen!
The information below is for summer 2023, but planning is underway for summer 2024. Please check back here for updates early next year.

The two Pathways to Excellence program options for summer 2023 are:

  • Math and First-Year Connections — a comprehensive, four-week session with two courses.
  • Math Connections — a shorter, three-week session, with only one course.

Check your CSUN email account for a program invitation in early May 2023 and after!

Math and First-Year Connections (4 weeks)

Math and First-Year Connections is for first-time freshmen who are eligible and available to attend the Pathways to Excellence program four days a week, four hours a day, for four weeks this summer. In addition to taking the UNIV 100 and ESM 196P courses, you’ll meet with peer mentors, receive tutoring or coaching, and participate in social activities.   • University 100 (UNIV 100)
  • Early Start Math 196P (ESM 196P)

Days and times

Math and First-Year Connections meets 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, for 4 weeks.

Monday through Thursday:

  • Mornings, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Afternoons, 1 to 5 p.m.
ModeThis program option meets on the CSUN campus each day.
UNIV 100

 UNIV 100 introduces you to college life and offers strategies for learning, ethical decision-making, goal setting, self-discovery, time management and health, safety and wellness. You’ll hone your college study and writing skills, too. Includes on-site visits and presentations to learn about university resources and services. Discover your strengths and interests and become part of the CSUN community this summer. (Available for General Education, E Lifelong Learning.) (IC = Information Competence)

ESM 196P

ESM 196P – Math Diagnostic (1 unit)

ESM 196P is a credit/no credit math course that offers an accelerated review of elementary algebra topics and an introduction to higher-level mathematics topics. Successfully completing ESM 196P this summer will qualify you to enter Math 102, 103, 131, 140, 210, 106, or higher without taking a supplemental instruction class in the fall. Placement is based on competency test scores taken at the end of the class.

  • Please note: CSUN’s enrollment system will direct you to a STEM or non-STEM class section based on your major. If your major is Exploratory, choose a STEM or non-STEM section based on your career interests. Learn more on this page.

  • With the fee waiver: free*
  • Without the fee waiver: $766*

*The current fee estimate is $191 per semester unit and is subject to change based on approved fee increases. In addition, a campus fee of $2 ($1 each for Health Facilities and Student Union) is also charged. Some students may qualify for a fee waiver based on their Expected Family Contribution reported on FAFSA or CADAA. Without the fee waiver, fees are due online within 24 hours of enrolling.


Take a STEM or non-STEM Section of ESM 196P.

You will take Early Start Math (ESM 196P) no matter which Pathways to Excellence option you choose. Some class sections of ESM 196P are designed for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors while others are designed for specific non-STEM majors.

Sections of ESM 196P are offered for the following majors:

  1. STEM-related majors:
    • Environmental and Occupational Health
    • Kinesiology Exercise Science
    • Radiologic Science
    • Any other STEM major
  1. All majors in the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics (non-STEM)
  2. Statistics-dependent majors such as Psychology, Sociology, etc. (non-STEM)

Which ESM 196P class do I need to take?

  • If you’ve declared one of the majors listed above, the enrollment system will direct you to the ESM 196P class section that matches your major.
  • If your non-STEM major is not listed above, you should not take Pathways to Excellence this summer. If you will take MATH 131 in your first three semesters at CSUN, don't take Pathways to Excellence this summer. You won't see any ESM 196P classes in the enrollment system, but be sure you're looking during the correct registration period.
  • If your major is Exploratory, you’ll see all available sections of ESM 196P in the enrollment system. Choose a STEM or specific non-STEM section based on your career interests.

Math Connections (3 weeks)

Math Connections is for first-time freshmen who are eligible and available to attend twice a week, 2 ½ hours a day, for three weeks this summer. In addition to taking the single ESM 196P course, you’ll receive tutoring and meet with peer mentors. To learn more about these activities, check your CSUN email for messages from the Office of Student Success.

ESM 196P offers several options to choose from:

  • Morning, afternoon or evening classes.
  • Classes that meet fully or half online.
  • Class sections for STEM and specific non-STEM majors.

When you enroll in Math Connections ESM 196P, be sure to check “Class Notes” for special instructions.

Math Connections, mentoring and tutoring meets 2.5 hours a day, twice a week, for 3 weeks.

  • Mornings, 9 to 11:30 a.m.
-OR-
  • Afternoons, 1 to 3:30 p.m.
-OR-
  • Evenings, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Check for M & W, or T & Th, meeting patterns when enrolling and choose the days and times that work for you.

ModeTwo choices, both with online course designations:
  • Online Hybrid (OH) – Approximately half online and half on campus. The online half is asynchronous (do at any time).
-OR-
  • Fully Online (OF) – Online synchronous meetings (you must attend online at the scheduled time) combined with online asynchronous course work. There are no on-campus meetings.
