The following class meeting patterns apply for Fall 2021 only.
The CSU says classes will be "mostly in person." What does that mean at CSUN?
It means we'll be offering a mixture of fully online and courses with on campus meetings in the Fall. About 30% of the scheduled classes will have an on campus component. The rest will be fully online.
I still see class times on the schedule for Fully Online classes. Why?
There are three ways the Fully Online courses are offered. Two types of Fully Online classes have meeting times.
- Fully Online Asynchronous (FOA in the Schedule of Classes). These classes do not have a set meeting time. Students are not required to meet together at the same time.
- Fully Online Synchronous (FOS in the Schedule of Classes). These classes have a set meeting time. You're expected to be online via the recommended software platform (e.g. Zoom, Canvas) during the entire class meeting time.
- Fully Online Intermittent (FOI in the Schedule of Classes). These classes have some meetings at the set meeting time and some work is done "asynchronously" outside of the scheduled sessions. Students are expected to be available to be online via the recommended software platform (e.g. Zoom, Canvas) during the entire meeting time slot. Students should consult the schedule of classes and faculty member for details of the meeting pattern.
What about classes on campus?
Yes, there are classes that will have on-campus meetings. A lot of these classes are "Campus Online" classes and are labeled with one of these codes in the Schedule of Classes:
- Campus Online Asynchronous (COA in the Schedule of Classes). The classes do not have a set online meeting time. They will have scheduled on-campus meetings that will be arranged in advance.
- Campus Online Synchronous (COS in the Schedule of Classes). These classes have a set meeting time. Some of these meetings will be online during the scheduled time using the recommended software platform (e.g. Zoom, Canvas) and some of the meetings will be on-campus during the scheduled time.
- Campus Online Intermittent (COI in the Schedule of Classes). These classes have some set meeting times and some work is done "asynchronously" outside of the in-person sessions. Students are expected to be available to be online via the recommended software platform (e.g. Zoom, Canvas) during the entire meeting time slot. On campus meetings will take place during the scheduled time slot. Students should consult the schedule of classes and faculty member for details of the meeting pattern.
In addition, we will have some Face-to-Face classes and some course designated as Hybrid/Half Online (OH). A handful of “OH” classes will be taught in a mode called Hyflex and will have students both on and off campus at the same time. Please look at the class notes and modes of instruction for any class not listed as Fully Online to make sure you know what the on-campus expectation is for the Fall term.
How will I know if I have to come to campus?
If you register in a class designated as Campus online (COA, COI, COS), hybrid/half online (OH), or Face to Face, you need to plan to come to campus. We’ll notify you via your CSUN email address if you sign up for any on-campus classes.
If a class has a room listed is that where it will meet?
Not necessarily. Some on-campus classes will be moved to larger rooms to allow for social distancing. Please check your portal in August for final room assignments.
I registered for an on-campus class and it doesn't have a classroom listed. What do I do?
If approved for on-campus meetings, the room will appear in your portal.
When will the on-campus class list be finalized for Fall 2021?
Courses are listed currently in the mode they will be taught. Be sure to know what kind of courses you've registered for.
What if I don't like the class meeting pattern?
If possible, choose another class. Consult your advisor for options if needed.
It looks as if I’ll have an on-campus class and I can’t come to campus. The course is required in my major and not taking it will put me behind in finishing my degree. What do I do?
Please consult with your advisor. If you register for an on-campus class, you are expected to come to campus for the meetings. CSUN will follow all Los Angeles County guidelines for social distancing and COVID safety. In some cases, substitutions can be made for required courses meeting on campus only. In other cases, it may require rearranging course sequencing to allow you to wait to return to campus until Spring of 2022.
