Statement on Tree of Life Synagogue Mass Shooting

The following message was posted at the CSUN website on October 28, 2018.

On behalf of the California State University, Northridge community, our deepest sympathies and condolences go to the victims, survivors, families, loved ones, first responders and others affected by the heinous act of terror and hatred that took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — one of the worst attacks against the Jewish community in our nation's history. Such tragedies are a reminder of the need to be always vigilant, and to cherish and appreciate our loved ones.

It is especially heartbreaking to have this violence occur at the end of a dark week in our nation's history that was filled with politically motivated terror targeting leaders across the country, including from California. CSUN is proud to be home to one of the nation's largest Jewish student populations. We will continue to push back against hate and discrimination.

In accordance with a proclamation from the White House, I have directed that the flag over the Oviatt Library be flown at half staff until sunset, October 31, in honor of the victims of this senseless tragedy.
