It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness we share the news that José Luis Vargas, Director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at CSUN, passed away over the weekend following a brief illness. We ask that members of the campus community join us in keeping José Luis and his family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
A graduate of CSUN who was recognized as a student for his leadership, passion and commitment, he was recruited by the founders of the EOP to work in the program and became Director in 1994. During his tenure, he collaborated with diverse individuals and departments across campus to create one of the most admired EOP organizations in California. He was an adept administrator, a mentor to thousands of students, and a role model for us all. A champion of disconnected youth, he understood the importance of social support, as well as educational assistance, for students' success. Many of the best practices for supporting students across campus began under his leadership.
His advice was sought often by EOP directors elsewhere in California and the nation. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers. Let us take some consolation that his memory will live on through our continued good works in the community and with one another.
We will keep the campus community informed about memorials and other activities honoring his life and legacy as they become available.
