Governor Newsom Signs Assembly Bill 1460

August 18, 2020

To the Campus Community,

Yesterday, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1460 making ethnic studies a graduation requirement within the California State University. We are at a moment in time, as evidenced by the national demand for true equality, that clearly highlights the importance of this new law. I want to recognize the immense effort of the students, faculty and staff who championed this bill and helped achieve the passage and signing of this historic legislation.

CSUN is proud to be one of the most diverse universities in the nation and home to distinguished ethnic studies departments. Universities like CSUN play a vital role in helping to turn this moment into sustained efforts to eradicate systemic racism and injustice, and build a stronger, more inclusive society.

With the bill now law, my hope is that we will make every effort to move forward together as a campus community. This will call for necessary changes to our general education (GE) that Faculty Senate will need to address. I thank our faculty leaders for this important work.

As we move forward together, we will continue to champion equality and justice for all.

Sincerely,

Dianne F. Harrison, Ph.D.
President
