Civic Engagement and Voter Empowerment

September 21, 2020

To the Campus Community:

Tomorrow is National Voter Registration Day. One of our most important duties and privileges as a citizen of a vibrant democracy is the right to vote. Voting provides the opportunity for voters to be heard. I encourage all eligible members of the campus community to register to vote, and then to exercise this right in the November election.

To foster civic engagement and voter empowerment in the 2020 election and beyond, our “We the People” leadership team has created activities and events through CSUN Act Now (CAN). Visit the CSUN Act Now (CAN) website to learn more about the activities, performances, lectures, seminars, and exhibits to help Matadors make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in their communities.

I want to share some important dates and deadlines related to the upcoming election:

  • October 19, 2020 — Last Day to Register to Vote in California (postmarked or submitted electronically)
  • October 26, 2020 — Last Day to Request a Vote by Mail Ballot (application must be received no later than 7 days before Election Day)

Information for November 3, 2020 General Election

All California voters will receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the November 3, 2020, General Election. Voters who can vote by mail will help ensure safe physical distancing at voting locations. County elections offices will begin sending vote-by-mail ballots to California voters beginning October 5, 2020. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by November 3, 2020; ballots returned at a secure ballot drop box must be deposited by 8 p.m. on November 3, 2020.

In early October, Los Angeles County officials will publish information on the date, times, and locations for early voting and conditional voter registration, which may be confirmed on the website of the Secretary of State of California or at the county elections office. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla has much more information on student voting resources on the California Students Vote Project website.

There are also a number of other websites with information for all voters:

Some of this information applies to Los Angeles County, and election information varies by county. Please check the Secretary of State’s voter registration website to find election information for the county where your voter registration is active.

I hope you find this information helpful and that you will register to vote and then be sure to vote in November.

Thank you for your civic engagement.

Sincerely,

Dianne F. Harrison, Ph.D.
President
