President's Office

Chief Information Officer Appointed April 29 1998

I am pleased to announce that Dr. David Liu has accepted the appointment of Chief Information Officer (CIO) for California State University, Northridge. Dr. Liu has extensive experience in both the private sector and the California State University system, an interesting mix of backgrounds that made him a standout candidate for the CIO position. He is presently serving as Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Information Systems, School of Business and Economics, at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Liu also founded Liu and Associates, a successful consulting company that provides support for technology-related businesses. His professional background includes many additional technical and management positions within various high tech and information companies.

Dr. Liu has a Ph.D. from UCLA in Engineering with a minor in Software Systems; an M.B.A. in Business and Management from Pepperdine University; and a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from UCLA. He will assume the newly created CIO position on June 1, 1998.

As I mentioned in a previous From the President's Desk, the CIO position will report directly to the President and assume responsibility for strategic planning, policy and programs related to information technology. The position of CIO is rapidly becoming the norm in universities as we realize how information technologies are impacting all campus operations. The appointment of the new CIO position concludes an exhaustive and competitive six-month search. I was heartened by the many fine candidates who applied for the position and, particularly, the quality of the finalists. I would like to also thank the Search Committee - Dr. William Hosek (Chair), Dr. Mary Ann Cummins Prager, Mr. Fred Dukes, Dr. Carlos Maldonado, and Mr. Greg Nicols - for their hard work and dedication in completing this important search successfully. Thanks, too, to Ms. Camille Brooks and Dr. Nancy Fernandez, who also contributed to the committee's search.

We look forward to having the university community join me in congratulating Dr. Liu and welcoming him to the campus.
