Hawai’i wins its 51st consecutive set, BYU, Stanford get upsets
There were three collisions in the AVCA top 15 on Saturday. Undefeated No. 2 Hawai’i kept things rolling, sweeping No. 12 CSUN again to extend its consecutive win streak to 51. It was also a good night to be home as there were two significant MPSF upsets as No. 8 Stanford defeated No. 4 UCLA in five sets at Maples Pavilion, and No. 9 BYU upset No. 6 Pepperdine at the Smith Fieldhouse. All of those recaps to follow, but first Sunday’s schedule. -- Volleyball Magazine

Appreciation: Tom Hatten was more than a TV host to this young viewer
Unlike other local kids’ show hosts, who might later intermittently rise from their rockers for a nostalgic celebration — many were not otherwise professional entertainers — Hatten remained a public presence. Sometime in the mid-1970s, when it was basically impossible to find the early "Popeye" cartoons, I went to see him in person at Cal State Northridge, where he showed them, and probably some Betty Boop shorts, for a couple of hours. (I still have the flier.) Not long afterward, he returned to KTLA with "Popeye and His Friends" (in civilian clothing), and I watched him regularly again, if from a more sophisticated point of view. Because his focus was so particular — the 1930s work of animators Max and Dave Fleischer — there was something sort of educational, even evangelical about his programs. You could approach them as a connoisseur, a cultist. -- Los Angeles Times

No. 2 Hawaii volleyball sweeps No. 12 Cal State Northridge
Junior opposite Rado Parapunov put down 12 kills and senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg added nine as No. 2 Hawaii remained undefeated with its 16th straight sweep, dropping No. 12 Cal State Northridge 25-23, 25-16, 25-17 in tonight’s Big West men’s volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center. -- Honolulu Star-Advertiser

IOWA CITY, Iowa. (KCRG) - The Iowa Hawkeyes fell 8-5 in their home opener to the Cal-State Northridge Matadors on Saturday afternoon. Iowa led 3-2 through the first three innings but the Matadors used a three-run home run by Sean Skelly to take the lead in the seventh. -- KCRG
CSUN's JEFFREY AUERBACH: How boring was life in the British Empire?
Boredom is a pervasive problem. Teenagers suffer from it. Workers are afflicted by it. Psychologists research it. Academic conferences are devoted to it. There is even evidence that you can die of it. And while there are those who claim that boredom can foster creativity, many people would rather give themselves an electric shock than be bored. -- Oxford University Press blog

Per The New York Times, Lauren Ridloff (born Lauren Teruel) grew up in Chicago with a Mexican-American father and African-American mother who discovered that she was deaf at age 2. Her parents learned sign language and sent her to a regular school until age 13 when she started attending the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, where she was a competitive cheerleader and dabbled in some school plays. Later, Lauren attended California State University, Northridge and earned a degree in English and Creative Writing and was also crowned Miss Deaf America from 2000-2002.
