This Bay Area university has become a ‘ghost town.’ Can a new president save it?

While Spagna was on faculty at Cal State Northridge in 1994, a massive earthquake ripped through campus, toppling buildings and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Over the next 23 years, Spagna watched the university use innovative marketing campaigns to nearly double its enrollment — from roughly 24,000 students to around 40,000.
