NSF REU Site: Applying Data Science on Energy-efficient Cluster Systems and Applications

Location: California State University, Northridge

Summer 2024: June 3, 2024 - July 26, 2024 (Application is open until March 17, 2024!)

This is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). The goals of this program include increasing the participation of undergraduate students, especially from groups that are underrepresented in computing, in research on data science and energy-efficient computing; and applying data science to build energy-efficient cluster systems and applications. It will provide opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct research during an 8-week summer program.

REU Site objectives:

  • Students will develop skills in intelligent data collection, data processing, and data visualization of geospatial data and maps;
  • Students will gain expertise in applying data science technologies and methods to model the energy consumption of cluster systems and automobile air conditioning systems;
  • Students will study parallel and distributed computing knowledge and investigate solutions to reduce the energy cost of cluster systems and applications.

Our REU Site will provide undergraduate students with an immersive experience in which they will participate in training and research activities to apply knowledge and skills of data science and parallel and distributed computing on energy-efficient cluster systems and applications. Students will gain research experience in problem-solving through analyzing existing research, designing and conducting experiments, and applying data science technologies in data collection, analysis, processing, and modeling. The faculty mentors in this program have exceptional expertise in data science and parallel and distributed computing, with extensive experiences in mentoring undergraduate student research. A series of training sessions will be provided at the beginning of the program to onboard students, introducing the working environment, the context of the research, and technical skills needed for projects in the program. The students selected for the REU Program will receive a stipend of $700/week for the 8-week period and subsistence allowance including boarding and meals.
