Flores, 73, was born in El Paso but spent most of her life in California. Before her family moved to the Los Angeles area from El Paso, Flores said she spent much of her early childhood in Ciudad Juárez where her grandparents lived. She had a career as an attorney, but she also was an instructor at an education center for Sacramento City College, a professor at California State University's Northridge and Sacramento campuses and a substitute teacher in Los Angeles.
