Blackwell started running in ninth grade, mostly to improve her stamina on the basketball court, and she took up cross-country running at high school in Chico, where she grew up. But it wasn’t until she went to college at Cal State Northridge that she got serious about running. She competed in track and field during her college years, from 2001 to 2006.
