Kolze was born in Sacramento and grew up in Lodi. He attended Tokay and St. Mary’s high schools, then went to Moorpark and Delta community colleges. He graduated from Cal State Northridge in 1984. Kolze played baseball through high school and college. He began coaching softball as an assistant in 1988 at UNLV and was on the Rebels’ staff when they made it to the College World Series in 1990 and 1991.
