More than 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease. In the US alone, combined costs of treatments are estimated at nearly $25 billion a year, according to the Parkinson’s Foundation. CSUN's Language, Speech and Hearing Center is now able to cut down on those costs — after receiving funding and instruction from the Parkinson Voice Project — by providing intensive speech therapy sessions for people with Parkinson’s disease, based on “pay-it-forward” donations. HHD was well represented at the 2018 CSUN Volunteer Service Awards. Bonnie Faherty and Edward Feldman received the CSUN for Life Award, Joni Campanella Roan was named the University Honoree from the College; the three are members of the Dean's Circle. Seven dedicated volunteers were named Alumni Chapter Honorees. The participation, support and loyalty of volunteers who serve the university celebrated at this time every year. Read more
Environmental and Occupational Health Department Chair Nola Kennedy received word this week that she has been appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board. Among her accomplishments, the governor’s announcement cited her professionalism and history of commitment to safe working conditions for workers. Read more
The Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics (Family and Consumer Sciences) got the University Economic Development Association (UEDA) Award of Excellence, and HHD is in good company with recipients from the David Nazarian College of Business and Economics. Both awards were for excellence in demonstrating higher education economic engagement. The Magaram Center got the organization's Editor's Choice Award for a peer mentoring program that increases diversity in the field of dietetics to expand nutrition education in our communities.
