To the Campus Community,
This past week, sadly, we learned of several assaults perpetrated against CSUN students both on and off campus. My thoughts are with the victims as they recover from these heinous crimes. While suspects have been arrested in each case, many in our community are understandably concerned about safety on and near campus. CSUN remains vigilant about the safety of our students, our faculty and staff, and our visitors.
On Friday, Chief of Police Anne Glavin communicated with campus about two of these terrible assaults. Another case is under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department involving two students who were attacked off-campus. Again, both perpetrators are in custody and are no longer a threat to our campus.
As an open, urban campus, we also face the safety challenges of the general public and take exceptional steps to ensure the safety of our campus community. These incidents are a painful reminder of the dangers that exist always. They also affirm that we must continuously assess the conditions of safety on campus. Given our absolute commitment to campus safety, be assured that CSUN Police will evaluate these cases to ensure we are doing everything we can to prevent and respond to violence against members of our campus community. I also invite you to share any ideas you have that might work to improve campus safety.
In addition, as we saw in these cases, bystander intervention, reporting crimes to CSUN Police and reporting suspicious behavior are all important elements of our campus safety. I want to reiterate that anyone who has been a victim of a crime should report it. We take these reports seriously.
It will continue to be a priority of mine to keep members of the campus community informed of criminal activity that occurs on campus. To that end, CSUN maintains a Daily Crime Log of all criminal incidents and alleged criminal incidents that are reported to CSUN police.
By working together, we can create a safer environment for all students and employees to learn, work and thrive.
