Pepnet 2 (pn2) was a federally-funded project to increase the education, career and lifetime choices available to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Numerous resources were developed over its 20+ year lifespan including online training, national Building State Capacity summit materials, Deaf Learners Community of Practice and Quick Classes.

A Beginner’s Guide to eLearning explores pepnet 2’s journey into online learning. It describes the structure and format of what became known as QuickClasses, and explains why we made the choices we did. It looks at four classes in depth and includes commentary from the content developers and facilitators as to what worked well and what could have been improved upon. The intention is that this publication will assist agencies, institutions, and organizations in creating accessible online professional development opportunities, that adhere to Universal Design principles. By sharing our experiences and lessons learned we hope that you can avoid pitfalls and more effectively create your own virtual trainings. Paradigm Shift: Connecting Research to Practice ̶ Strategies for Deaf Learners is a compilation of those materials and research. The DLI white papers and the State of the Nation from the DLI work are included to provide a framework for the Connecting Research to Practice (CRP) briefs that drive the rest of this publication. The design of the CRPs is to provide the reader with a description of the domain (derived from the DLI initiative), the relevance of this domain and how it relates to young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing, and practices that stakeholders can implement immediately. It is meant to be a tool that can provide a base of understanding in each domain, evidence-based practices (when available) and vital strategies for administrators, educators, parents, interpreters, and other service providers who work directly with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This online training, designed for transition-aged students who are deaf or hard of hearing, utilizes three questions: Who Am I?; What Do I Want?; and How Do I Get There? Video vignettes, self-assessments, and a series of interactive questions guide students as they identify their goals and develop strategies to achieve them. Additional materials are provided for use by teachers and counselors. Click here to download Teacher Curriculum.
