NCOD Tutoring Update - Online/In-Person Tutoring 

Tutoring will be provided online via Zoom and/or In-person for NCOD students only.  Please email to schedule your appointments with your desired tutor. 

Student Learning Program

NCOD's well-educated tutors can enhance your success in the classroom. From English to biology, many of our tutors major in the subject in which they tutor. Most of them are deaf or hard of hearing, and they all know sign language. Tutoring can be of enormous benefit by sharpening study skills, identifying problem areas, gaining greater mastery of subject materials, and developing confidence in your ability to excel in class. Tutoring services start on the second week of class instruction on a Tuesday and tutoring services end on the last day of class instruction.   Tutoring walk-in hours are posted at the center and appointments can be made in person.  During finals week, should you need additional tutoring services, please meet with the tutor of your choice to discuss dates and time.  You will need to fill out a Tutor Service Request form or email Zachary Lotane at

What to Expect from Your Tutor

What Tutors Expect from You

Come with a plan. Know what you need to work on during your session.

Be prepared. Bring the required class materials (i.e., textbooks, class notes, essay prompts, hard copies of your papers, etc.) you need for your session. Print your papers before, not during, your session.

Arrive on time. Keep track of the time and avoid distractions (i.e., chatting with a peer, printing papers, using the pager, etc.). Your appointment-only tutor will leave or see another student if you do not arrive within the ten-minute frame.

Avoid procrastination. Allow extra time to work on your class materials. Be an active participant. Expect to be engaged in the tutoring process. Your tutor will ask questions and initiate dialogue during the session. Provide feedback. Your tutor is not a mind reader and does not always know what you need. Expect to be honest and inform your tutor if a specific technique used in the session is not right for you.

Do follow through. Show commitment to self improvement and achieving goals.

What to Expect from Your Tutor

Respect and professionalism in the workplace. All tutors are trained and follow the National Tutoring Association Code of Ethics which includes maintaining confidentiality unless your tutor believes that you are in danger.

Tutors are not homework machines. Your tutor will not do your work for you, but will help you solve problems.

Tutors are not miracle workers. Your tutor does not have a “magic wand” to make miracles happen for you. However, your tutor will help you develop effective techniques in reading, writing, studying, and problem solving.

Tutors are not editors. Your tutor will not edit your paper for you, but will work with you to identify areas of improvement and make suggestions for revision.

No-Show Policy for Appointment-Only Tutorial Services

No-Show Policy

The NCOD Student Learning Program has a no-show policy to maximize the use of our tutorial services and financial resources for deaf and hard of hearing students who are registered through NCOD.

To avoid a no show, you must inform your tutor, the tutor coordinator, or the program supervisor of the Student Learning Program that you will not be attending your appointment-only tutorial session at least two hours in advance.

You could lose services in appointment-only tutoring if you do not cancel your sessions within the required time frame.

First No-Show
Contact the tutor coordinator or program supervisor that you need appointment-only tutorial services returned.

Second No-Show
Arrange a meeting with the program supervisor to discuss the reinstatement of appointment-only tutorial services.

Third No-Show
Lose your privilege in appointment-only tutoring for the remaining of the semester. If you need tutoring, you must see a walk-in tutor during posted lab hours.
