Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam (UDWPE)

Attempting the UDWPE

Students who have completed 56 units and have met the lower division writing requirement are required to take an essay exam called the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam. Students must attempt this exam prior to completion of 75 units.  A passing score on the exam is required prior to enrollment in 400-level courses in the major.  To learn more, please visit the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam page.

Appeal for an Extension

Students who have completed 75 units or more and have not attempted the UDWPE must register for the next exam immediately. Students who are unable to sign up for the exam prior to their registration date, may request an Appeal for Extension of Time to Satisfy UDWPE to the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

ENGL 090 Information

Students who have attempted the UDWPE two or more times may consider taking ENGL 090 in order to prepare for the exam. This course provides intensive practice in writing effective expository prose under test conditions.
