Fashioning a New Future

November 13, 2017

CSUN Business Honors student Chipo Hwami talks about her future career goals, and acceptance to the Millennium Momentum Foundation.

Chipo, a Marketing and Global Supply Chain major, was recently invited to join the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) for the Millennium Momentum Foundation. Traveling to different campuses across the greater Los Angeles area, Chipo will take part in leadership training seminars that will equip her with the professional tools and networking skills for her future career endeavors.

The LDI program accepts students on a recommendation basis, and Chipo was thrilled to have had her name put forward.

“It was such an honor, I wasn’t expecting it,” said Chipo. “I know that [the LDI] will help me get jobs, get recommendations—and really help me get ahead. And not just for me, but for my family as well.”

When asked about her long-term career goals and Marketing degree, Chipo revealed that her background is actually in fashion.

“My goal is to start my own [fashion design] business,” Chipo explained. “But I really didn’t have the business aspect of it, so I came back to school.”

Born in Zimbabwe, Chipo recalled the beginning of her fashion designing dreams. “When I was in elementary school, needlework was a requirement. I remember going outside with colorful fabrics and threads--and I remember looking down at my hands and thinking, ‘I’m going to make a living with my hands, I’m going to make a living with things I can create.”

With a talent for fashion design, and degree in Marketing in progress, Chipo’s dreams will undoubtedly come true. And in being invited to join the LDI program, she will be able to expand her network for her future business, and gain valuable skills that help make her dream a reality.

“I constantly feel like I don’t belong—I mean, I’m an artsy type of person! But being offered all of these new opportunities—it’s encouraging!”
