CSUN Guitar Faculty Named to Jury of Prestigious Competition

Guitar Faculty, Steven Thachuk and John Dearman, will serve on the jury for the finals of the GFA Competition, the most prestigious of its type in the world.

Guitar Area Professors Steve Thachuk and John Dearman have been named as judges for the semi-final and final rounds of the Guitar Foundation of America’s 32nd International Concert Artist Competition. The Competition, the world’s largest and most prestigious, is part of the annual GFA convention, this summer taking place at CSU Fullerton.

Dr. Thachuk returns to the department as Head of Guitar Studies, after appointments as Music Department Chair and Interim Executive Director of the Valley Performing Arts Center. In addition to performing with Ken Meyer as a member of the Meyer-Thachuk Guitar Duo, Dr. Thachuk will begin as faculty director of the Guitar Research Archive at CSUN in Fall 2014.

John Dearman recently completed his third year at CSUN where he works with classical guitar majors privately and in Guitar Chamber Music. Dearman is a member of the acclaimed Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, who will be featured performers at the upcoming GFA Festival. The Quartet will also be appearing at summer festivals in Mexico, Spain, Germany and the UK. In solo activities, John will be performing and assisting at the summer workshop of Yale School of Music, Director of Guitar Studies, Benjamin Verdery.
