World Music Fest
Program will include Indonesian Gamelan, Steel Drum Band, and Japanese Taiko Drumming.
Indonesian gamelan music is about 3,000 years old and was developed as a court orchestra in ancient Java. It is also used for dance and puppet shows. We will also perform well-known standard gamelan works along with rarely performed interlocking pieces from the central Java highlands.
The 20+ members of the CSUN Steel Drum Band will perform a variety of music inspired by Caribbean and Latin American rhythms. Audience members are encouraged to clap and dance to these instruments that originated from Trinidad and Tobago.
Japanese taiko drumming is an ancient activity that has grown into a dynamic performance style in the last 60 years. We will perform new taiko works from Japan as well as standard pieces in the taiko repertoire developed over the past 50 years in the United States.
