Spring Operas: L'impresario in angustie and Li sposi per accidente by Domenico Cimarosa

Director: Maurice Godin
Conductor: Mercedes Juan Musotto

The Opera Program will be producing two one-act operas by the Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa: Li sposi per accidenti and L'impresario in angustie. They will be performed in the Recital Hall, Cypress Hall, at CSUN on April 4, 5, 6 and 7, 2019 in Italian with English supertitles. The cast and orchestra will be CSUN students. They are superb examples of Opera Buffa and provide an excellent opportunity to experience Italian Farce.

These two operas have never been performed in the United States since their premiered in Naples in 1781 and 1786.

L'impresario in angustie

An impresario and his cast and creative team are preparing a new opera for their theatre. The three leading ladies are each attempting to intervene with the impresario, the composer, and the poet in charge of the libretto, in order to secure for themselves the biggest role, the most money, and best music in the new production. Each of the divas, in turn, is the object of amorous attention from one of the creators. The impresario is bankrupt, however, and the work will never see the light of day.

Li sposi per accidente

Pascariello, a fake philosopher, is father of Dorinetta and Brigida. The two girls are driving their father mad and diverting him from his philosophical readings by insisting he help to solve their biggest problem: finding a husband as soon as possible. The two girls find a possible solution in two visitors, Monsù Brusciolè and Malabarba. Pascariello also has a maid and a servant, Chiarella and Pulcinella, in love and about to get married. Their marriage, however, is undermined by the arrival in the house of a further guest, the alluring and mysterious Madama Erlecca. She is also a traveler, betrothed to Monsù Brusciolè but determined not to marry him. She discovers a much more interesting match in Pulcinella. The plot continues with a series of intrigues and complications and ends with an unexpected quadruple coupling.
