BM Winds Performance Audition Requirements

Flute

2 pieces: Mozart Concerto in G or D (Exposition only), then choose either Bach Sonata (complete) or piece from Flute Music by French Composers (Schirmer); All Major scales and 3 octave chromatic. (Transfer students: also 1–2 orchestral excerpts of student’s choice; plus All Minor scales.)

Oboe

Two selections (such as an etude and a movement from a sonata or concerto) of contrasting classical styles (no jazz or popular). It is strongly suggested that you select your audition materials in consultation with your private teacher or your school band/orchestra teacher. Prepare all major scales. (Transfer students, be prepared to play all major & minor scales.) Do not use an accompanist at your audition.

Bassoon

Two selections (such as an etude and a movement from a sonata or concerto) of contrasting classical styles (no jazz or popular). It is strongly suggested that you select your audition materials in consultation with your private teacher or your school band/orchestra teacher. Prepare all major scales. Clarinet

  • Mozart: Concerto No. 3 for horn in Eb major, K 447, mvt. 1
  • Mozart: Concerto No. 4 for horn in Eb major, K 495, mvt. 1

List B

  • Beethoven: Horn Sonata in F major, op. 17, mvt. 1
  • Saint-Saens: Morceau de Concert, op. 94, mvt. 1
  • Strauss: Concerto No. 1 for horn in Eb major, op. 11, mvt. 1

3. Excerpts (Please prepare all three excerpts.)

  • a. Beethoven - Symphony No. 3, op. 55
    Mvt. III Trio: Allegro vivace, ms. 169-202
    Horn 2 in E-flat; dotted half = 116
  • b. Brahms – Symphony No. 3, op. 90
    Mvt. III. Poco Allegretto, ms. 98-110 (F – 12 after F)

  • c. Strauss – Till Eulenspiegel, op. 28
    Gemächlich
