MigraHack 2015

California State University, Northridge journalism students participated in Arizona Migrahack this past weekend at the University of Arizona campus in Tucson, Arizona. The free three-day event was sponsored by the Institute for Justice & Journalism. The hackathon brought together developers, journalists, graphic designers and activists to compete in a data visualization contest.

Participants attended a day of workshops on data journalism, mapping, public records and more before splitting off into teams. The newly formed teams of varied skill sets were then given a day and a half to create a project involving data under the guidance of mentors from media outlets including NPR, Pew Research Center and the Arizona Daily Star.

Cal State Northridge students competed against working professionals from the Associated Press, Hoy, and Arizona Public Radio. You can view their project here.

The event was previously held in Mexico City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
