Kandace HarrisI am pleased to announce that Dr. Kandace Harris will join the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication as Associate Dean starting on August 19, 2019. Dr. Harris is currently a member of the executive leadership team at Shaw University as special assistant to the president, and has served as a Department Chair and faculty member at Clark Atlanta University (Mass Media Arts), Shaw University (Mass Communications), and Johnson C. Smith University (Communication Arts). She is a media scholar with expertise in mass communications and technology, specifically social media, television, and digital media, and she has received honors including Shaw University’s Excellence in Academic Teaching Award and the Rex Crawley Outstanding Service Award from the National Communication Association’s Black Caucus. As a scholar, Dr. Harris has most recently co-edited the book Representations of Black Womanhood on Television: Being Mara Brock Akil and contributed the chapter “Follow Me on Instagram”: “Best Self” Identity Construction and Gaze through Hashtag Activism and Selfie Self-Love in the book Women of Color and Social Media Multitasking Blogs, Timelines, Feeds, and Community. She holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication and Media Studies, an M.A. in Human Communication Studies, and a B.A. in Print Journalism, all from Howard University.

I would like to thank the members of the search and screen committee for their diligent work: David Blumenkrantz (Journalism, committee chair), Rebecca Litke (Communication Studies), Marcy DeVeaux (Journalism), Larry Biederman (Theatre), Paul Lazarony (Associate Dean in the David Nazarian College), and Jennifer Kukucka (CTVA student).
