Betty Ann Brown is an art historian, critic, and curator. She received her Ph.D. in the History of Art in 1978 and joined the CSUN faculty in 1986. Her research and teaching have ranged from the ancient--Precolumbian Art of Mexico--to contemporary--Los Angeles Art Today. Brown has curated retrospective exhibitions for Hans Burkhardt, Roland Reiss, Linda Vallejo, June Wayne, and John White, as well as numerous themed exhibitions. Her most recent curatorial project was Time, Space & Matter: Five Installations Exploring Natural Phenomena, which featured the work of Lita Albuquerque, Suvan Geer, George Geyer, Mineko Grimmer, Tom McMillan, and Christine Nguyen.
Brown has written critical reviews for various periodicals--including Art Ltd., Arts, Artillery, Artscene, Artweek, and The Los Angeles Times—and published several books, among them Exposures, Women & Their Art; Expanding Circles: Women, Art & Community; Gradiva’s Mirror: Reflections on Women, Surrealism & Art History; Hero, Madman, Criminal, Victim: The Artist in Film & Fiction; and Afternoons with June: Stories of June Wayne’s Art & Life. Her popular Art 305 class is based on her eBook Art & Mass Media. Brown was featured in four History Channel programs and produced a number of discussions about art history for eHow online. She organizes of “Contemporary Art Conversations,” an ongoing series of panel discussions between critics and artists that convenes in various Southern California venues.
