25th Anniversary

The Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics at California State University, Northridge is celebrating its 25th Anniversary on Thursday, September 15, 2016. The Center will open its doors for the evening and showcase its first 25 years of promoting health throughout our community. The evening will include cooking demonstrations at the MMC Wellness Kitchen by an award winning cookbook author, culinary students, famous local restaurant chefs, and campus chefs. The event will be emceed by Daytime Emmy Award winning television and film actor Obba Babatunde, and will feature highlights of the Center’s current and past projects, a tour of the Center’s facilities such as the Health Assessment room showcasing gold standard body composition testing with the BodPod, a trip to our newly developed food science garden where you can get a taste of our Spicy Matadors project through the “Spice Challenge,” history of cooking by Barbara Fairchild from Bon Appetite magazine, a must-see nutrition musical by Helen Butleroff-Leahy – former Rockette, Broadway choreographer, and Registered Dietitian – with performances by current Broadway stars, as well as tributes to our key supporters.

Through the Marilyn Magaram Center, students have a variety of opportunities to learn about the benefits of better nutrition and how it affects health – and to share what they learn with their communities. Together, students and faculty engage in research and conduct health promotion activities in some of our region’s most underserved areas. The Center is also a resource for food-oriented businesses, providing food product evaluations, sensory testing, nutritional evaluations, facilities for food demonstrations, knowledgeable and talented student interns, and training for the future workforce of the industry.
We anticipate 200 people will attend the event and invitations are going out to more than 3,000 alumni, friends and supporters of the center.
