October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October 20, 2022

Beginning in 2004, the President of the United States and Congress declared October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month, helping individuals and organizations protect themselves online as threats to technology and confidential data become more commonplace.

This year’s theme is “See Yourself in Cyber”. While cybersecurity may seem like it depends solely on technology, it’s actually all about taking action to CSUN’s faculty, staff and student data. This October we are focusing on the “people” part of cybersecurity by providing information and resources to help educate CSUN faculty, staff and students on how to make smart decisions whether at CSUN or at home – both now and in the future.

Each week in October, CSUN information Security is providing more information on topics to help you protect your data. The dates and topics are:

Week 1 – Phishing – Dangers of phishing, types of phishing and how to avoid being a victim

Week 2 – Use Strong Passwords – Dangers of weak passwords and how to use passwords on all of your financial data

Week 3 – Multi-Factor Authentication – The importance and setting up MFA on all your email, social media and banking apps

Week 4 – Update Your Software – Why it’s important and how to do it
